Human’s Self Destruct – Stop Blaming God

A personal view, April 2005

Emissions promoting global warming, rubbish into landfill sites, dumping of toxic waste in the sea…and we blame natural disasters on God!  Feed a healthy child toxic food, teach the child bad ways, give the child a harmful environment and we will most likely have a sick child on our hands. We inherited the earth. God made man to look after planet earth. We may not have wanted it, we may not have wanted to be born…..but that is life - as my Aussie friend says "Build a bridge and get over it"

Global Warming Complacency

We feel the effects but as long as we feel “okay”, everything is okay….the world is safe. The doctor tells us we have high blood pressure, we have to change our living style. Some of us will change to keep ourselves healthy and some of us….because we “feel” fine, think otherwise. Until we become ill, we do not change.

The doctors (scientist) tells us there are issues in the way we live in our world, yet living in a developed world it is hard to get people to change unless their world is directly affected.

Right now the climate is changing: storms, hurricanes and tornados in some parts of the world, mild winters, heavy rainfall as the glaciers and ice caps melt, drought in other places.  Scientist say this is due to global warming and it is strongly suggested that we are accelerating the change in weather (see Garrett and Zhao study).

If this is so, global warming is here, but many are unable to change their lifestyle. The government initiatives and world efforts are minimal, not wanting to upset the people with drastic changes and taxation.  (Some countries like Switzerland and South Korea have successfully implemented variable rates for trash collection, see global review on waste management)

With the problem of high blood pressure and a heart attack, a person is more likely to change their ways than one who has not. The heart attack is the initiator to make a person change. The earth is ill, yet the human population appears to fail to see the significance of the weather warnings.

Man was given a world to look after and it will be man who is ultimately responsible for his own destruction through complacency.

We are accustomed to a certain lifestyle, and it is really difficult to give it up and finding alternatives is a slow process!

The Kyoto Agreement

In 1997, 30 industrialised nations signed a protocol to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to slow global warming. Although the US pulled out and left the agreement in limbo, in 2004, Russia and China agreed to ratify the Kyoto agreement.

Despite all this the nations have found it incredibly hard to change the figures. Greenhouse emissions are still at high levels and increasing. Why? The demand for fuel is high. Burning fossil fuels is a major contributor to greenhouse gases. We need to reduce this demand and encourage our government to use alternative “green” fuels such as solar/wind/others that have a reduced or nil contribution to the greenhouse gases.  We need to dump dump dump - check out what is happening to your rubbish - both recycled and what goes in the bin.

The Final Word

This is your world and you either save it or let it die in your hands. We are all responsible for its life no matter what age you are. Learn more about environmental issues so that you can make wise choices for yourself and your family and encourage others to conserve.

Remember:

"Less energy use means less dependence on the fossil fuels that contribute to global warming"
"Recycling means less in the landfills and incinerators that produce global warming gases.  Most of our rubbish can be recycled!"
