Teaching Eskimos Excel
March 2008
The time is coming to leave the safety of home and find out what cold is all about. The main challenges are:
- Getting to the start healthy and injury free. So often you hear this from marathon and ultra marathon participants. Just when everything seemed fantastic, wham! bang!.....an injury appears, or a bad virus takes over one's body. Currently my body for the second time in my life is suffering from a bad case of eczema. Am hoping the cold sterile environment will kill the itch and therefore the skin healing process can happen. Hockey has not helped: been whacked on the finger twice, ball on the knee (again), ball whack on the toe, knee grazed from sliding on the astro......as one friend has said "dun be so garang". One last game and then no more!
- Collect data for the weather and climate scientists that is consistent and accurate. It'll be one of the things to keep us occupied.
- Cook decent meals. I know the instant packet stuff is easy however would be awesome to be able cook something as well (Have got the instant packet stuff on stand by)
- Survive the cold and threat of polar bear. Strangely enough I am not so worried about the polar bears. Having camped in the tropical forests and had to look out for spiders, centipedes, leeches and anything else that could bite or otherwise larger carnivorous jungle animals, at least we ONLY need to look out for one animal that could prey on us and perhaps use me as a toothpick.
